If you're traveling to Australia on a temporary visa, it's advisable to think about obtaining Overseas Visitors Health Cover (OVHC). Without this coverage, you could be personally responsible for the entire expense of medical care, including consultations with doctors or hospital admissions, which can incur significant costs.
In some cases you may be required to take health insurance as part of your visa conditions, for example:
OVHC policies vary in costs, eligibility, and benefits, but typically include coverage for medically necessary hospital admissions and a portion of doctor's fees.
In addition to cover for hospital and medical expenses, you can also purchase General Treatment cover. General Treatment cover pays benefits towards the services of health care providers in private practice such as dentists, optometrists and physiotherapists. Insurance can cover part of these costs, though you would still need to cover part of the fees yourself.
Overseas students on temporary visas must maintain valid Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) throughout their stay in Australia to comply with visa requirements.
OSHC assists international students to meet the costs of medical and hospital care they may need while in Australia. OSHC also includes ambulance cover and limited pharmaceuticals.
